All photographs are from my personal collection or a loved ones.
Generational wealth comes in forms much greater than money. To me, the most sacred pieces of generational wealth are the moments we get with our loved ones, the stories shared and the lifelong wisdom whispered into our souls, the recipes we reuse with our own children, and the immense amount of love poured into our beings through raising us up.
Today, I am grateful for all the time I spent with my Abuelita while she was alive. She’s the adult in the picture above, while I’m the one smack in the middle, holding a pan dulce with my mouth wide open, and the others my sister and cousins. I continue to feel my Abuelita’s presence most of the time and talk to her most days. Her time, her wisdom, her recipes, her love… these pieces of generational wealth are my most sacred. If you understand Spanish, click here for a documentary of my Abuelita’s life, told by her! A beautiful window into the past and into the heart of Mexico.
My Abuelita loved to give, and so today, I give you one of her medicinal recipes for sore throat / cough / nasal issues:
Bring a pot of water, with a whole onion, sliced into big chunks, to a boil. Serve hot with local honey. Simple as that :)
Here is a little poem I wrote for her when she passed:
“Abuelita, You are the sunlight that shines upon our bodies, offering us warmth. You are the wind on our faces and in our hair, cleansing our souls. You are the rain that falls from the skies, washing away our worries. You are the light of the moon, guiding us through life. You are the smell of the trees, the herbs, and the flowers in the fields, reminding us of where we come from. Abuelita, you are the magic in our family tree. I Love You.”
Below is a peak into life with my Abuelita. The first image is a video, click to see four generations cooking together! May each of you treasure the love around you this weekend. Until next week! Con Amor, Angela C2 Ruiz
